How to review a certification claim

A certification name alone does not establish that every product in a brand’s range is covered. Look for the certificate or issuer record that identifies the applicable standard, product or material scope, certificate number, issuer, and dates. If one of those details is missing, treat the claim as unverified until the issuer or seller supplies the matching record.

A brand slogan is still not a substitute for the certificate number and Label Check on the exact garment.

GOTS and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 are different programs. GOTS evaluates organic fiber content plus processing and social criteria across a certified supply chain—parents should check the GOTS public database for the exact certificate scope and validity. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 tests finished articles or materials against set substance limits; when a garment shows a certificate number, verify it with OEKO-TEX Label Check. Compost certification is a separate third-party claim about end-of-life compostability under a named standard—it is not the same as saying a fiber is biodegradable as a material property.

Questions about materials and finishes

Fiber content, dyes, prints, finishes, and manufacturing location can differ by item. Do not infer the absence of a substance, a medical benefit, or suitability for sensitive skin from softness, a bamboo label, a general brand statement, or a parent anecdote. Follow the care label and ask the seller for item-specific documentation when the answer matters.
