Language acquisition in children under 2 requires a responsive human partner: someone who notices what the child is looking at, names it, responds to the child's attempt to communicate, and adjusts in real time.

A screen cannot do this. A screen cannot notice that your child is pointing at a dog and say "dog" in response. A screen cannot pause when your child looks confused and rephrase. A screen cannot tell, from your child's facial expression, that the concept isn't landing.

5. Screens during meals and in the hour before bed.

For children 18 months and older, co-viewing with a parent who actively discusses the content — pausing to ask questions, relating what they see to the child's real-world experience, rephrasing concepts — significantly increases learning outcomes compared to solo viewing of the same content. The media itself is only part of the equation. The mediation around the media is the multiplier.

One practical way to think about this: if you wouldn't be comfortable sitting next to your child and actively watching and discussing what they see — asking questions, pausing, laughing together at the same moments — then the content probably isn't worth the exposure.

That's a filter most "educational" shows fail.

What Good Subtraction Looks Like

Here is the honest version of what the subtraction framework requires: nothing.

You are not being asked to add anything. Not a new app, not a premium subscription, not a reading program, not a "brain-building" toy.

You are being asked to remove five patterns — some of which you may have been told were fine, or even beneficial — and let the existing human interaction in your family's life fill the space that screens were occupying.

For children under 18 months: no screens. This is the simplest recommendation in the research and the hardest in practice, because screen exposure is normalized in many communities and the pressure to let a baby watch "just a little" is real.

The evidence doesn't negotiate: zero screens before 18 months. The only exception is video calling with real people the child knows.

For background TV: off when not actively watched. This one change — no cost, no effort beyond a habit — improves the quality of every interaction in the room where the TV was previously running on background noise.

For fast-paced content: substitute with content that respects attention development — slower pace, longer scenes, real human faces, narrative with emotional range. If you're unsure, apply the co-viewing test: would you actively watch this with them?

The result of these five subtractions is not a more structured or deprivation-focused household. It is more human interaction — more talking, more noticing, more responsive back-and-forth — filling the space that screens were occupying.

That is what the research actually says is happening when screen time decreases for young children: not a void, but a replacement by the thing the research says matters most.

The One Question to Keep
